What Janet Wilkinson is bringing to The position Mayor

Janet brings a rich and varied background to office

Janet, grew up in rural Manitoba.  She was the youngest in a family of four, where she was constantly challenged to expand her knowledge in local, and world affairs.  The experiences that she received assisted in building her own, strong, individual character.  Janet was inspired to continue with her education, and successfully completed her Bachelors’ Degree, and Masters in Education. Janet taught for six years in Manitoba, where she married and had two children. Her husband’s occupation allowed them to move to Liberia, Africa, where she was exposed to many life’s experiences. In 1982, she arrived in Edson with her family, and became an active partner in their refrigeration business for many years.  It was here that their third child was born, thus cementing her involvement in the community.  Janet had traveled to, and vacationed in many parts of the world, and choosing Edson for her home was a deliberate and informed decision.

  Taking up residence, now allowed her to demonstrate her unique skills for caring for the welfare of others. In addition to being a wife, mother, business owner, substitute teacher, Janet has always contributed to her community in a major and significant way.  She has served at the highest levels of her fraternal service organization, the Order

of the Eastern Star, devoted countless hours to Lioness, served at all levels of the Alberta Teachers Association both locally, and provincially, and served on the University of Alberta Senate for six years.  Janet has always been active, and politically informed. 

Janet knows about and can work with change and challenge     

Janet, like many Edson citizens, raised her family while running a business. Raising three children is not without challenges, and Janet adapted to each circumstance that presented itself.  Completing her university degree, and Masters program enabled her to return to teaching.  Janet demonstrated that she was able to persevere, and overcome many obstacles that confronted her.  Janet 

cared for an aging parent until the death of her mother in 2007.  She is passionate about advocating the needs of the aging, and all disenfranchised people.

Janet has a dedicated, community service orientation

If you need something done, Janet has always been the go to person to call. Whether she was serving on Edson Community Boards, volunteering for groups that her children participated in, working within her fraternal organization or her professional association; assisting individuals in need or many other acts of kindness, Janet knows how to manage time and heavy workloads and always maintain balance.  She is one of the busiest people you will ever meet and her work is mainly directed toward others.
